CHAPTER SEVEN
SAFFRON WAS SMILING, and even though her happiness wasn’t forced, she wasn’t finding it easy to look happy. What was she doing? Blake was treating her like his actual wife, and aside from when he woke up in hot sweats during the night and didn’t want to talk about it, everything seemed...good. Real. Not that she was under any illusions, but still, it was weird.
“Come on, let’s go,” Blake said, kissing her on the lips and holding their joined hands in the air. “You were great tonight.”
“You sound like my choreographer,” she said with a laugh, still smiling as the crowd watched them. She was well used to being the center of attention, and far from feeling unusual having her every move watched just because she was on a man’s arm, she was getting a kick out of it. Usually she basked in the attention, full of pride that so many people were enjoying her creative outlet, a performance she’d put hours of her time, not to mention sweat and sometimes blood, into. This time she felt like an actress, and for some reason it didn’t feel any less satisfying. “Or maybe my cheerleader.”
“You’re brilliant, has anyone ever told you that?” Blake swept her into his arms and out of the room. She was starting to get the feeling that he was enjoying the performance as much as she’d enjoyed putting it on.
Saffron didn’t want their conversation to turn around to her dancing, so she let it go and didn’t answer. They headed straight outside and into the waiting town car.
“I think they bought it,” she said.
Blake leaned over and kissed her, his lips familiar to her now yet still making her body tingle. It would have been a much easier arrangement if they hadn’t started out by being intimate, although given the way her body reacted to him, she was starting to wonder if they could ever have been platonic.
“I have some key accounts that have always referred to my dad every time we met, gone on about the roots of the company being a family business and questioning my commitment, or at least that’s what it’s seemed like,” Blake said, settling back into the leather seat. “I don’t know if a rival was trying to get to them and spinning rubbish, or if it was just the reputation they thought I had, but things felt fragile there for a little while. Marrying you has made all that go away, and after tonight, man. You seriously wowed my big investor. I definitely believe you can be my little star for the next while.”
“So it’s been worth it for you already?” Saffron asked.
He grinned. “Yes. You?”
“You’ve given me access to medical professionals I’d never have been able to afford to consult with,” she said honestly. “And I’m still here. I still have a shot. So yeah.” Saffron laughed. “Marrying you hasn’t been half-bad!”
The car ride was only short, and soon they were heading up to their apartment.
